Flavorseal, the Avon, Ohio-based food packaging company, recently announced its updated Sustainability Policy to address the ongoing concerns with sustainability in the food processing and foodservice industries. Flavorseal’s new policy encompasses both a continued commitment to finding earth-friendly food packaging solutions for their customers, and internal programs designed to reduce the overall carbon footprint generated by the manufacturing facility.
“Flavorseal has always been concerned with their impact on the environment,” said Ken Hynes, VP of Flavorseal’s Foodservice Division and leader of the sustainability program at Flavorseal. “Programs like switching to motion sensor lights throughout the plant help us meet our goal of energy efficiency and reduced waste. But as technologies change and our company grows, there is always room to do more.”
An important part of the new program was the creation an internal “Green Team” – a group of volunteer employees representing all areas of the company. The Green Team’s mission is to develop new ways Flavorseal can be more “environmentally-friendly” within the foodservice and food processing industries. Since its inception, the Green Team has initiated company-wide recycling programs as well as educational events for Flavorseal employees.
To continue to meet the growing demand for sustainable food packaging that is also earth-friendly, Flavorseal has worked to develop packaging that is environmentally-friendly without sacrificing superior performance. “If we can reduce the amount of packaging that ends up in the landfill, whether as trim waste during production or after it is used, it can make a big difference,” continued Hynes. “Products like our FormShrink packaging, which uses 33% less packaging materials than standard shrink, is a perfect example of this type of thinking. If we help our customers make these kinds of changes to their packaging while still maintaining the package integrity, everybody wins.”
