Netting innovations as a path to processor profitability

By Lisa Vacco-Orlowski, Netting Product Manager

Today’s food processors face several challenges that threaten profitability. Top concerns include operational inefficiencies and rising production costs, both of which can make or break a processor’s margins. While new technologies can help, finding ways to integrate these innovations into an existing process can be quite challenging.

Evolving packaging products can positively impact profitability. For example, netting is one packaging and processing solution that has evolved quite rapidly over recent years and may offer producers a straightforward approach to help eliminate inefficiencies, reduce production and labor costs and boost product shelf appeal.

Here are three ways to consider incorporating food netting innovations in your process:

  1. Conduct a netting audit – An audit can be a great way to identify hidden wastes or inefficiencies in your current processing or packaging materials that could be addressed with new netting options. A thorough review of the netting used within the entire plant will give you a bird’s-eye view of your current needs and identify areas of potential improvement. Questions to address in this audit include:
    1. Are there two product lines using similar nets that could be combined to achieve greater economies of scale?
    2. Do you use piece goods at a volume where a switch to continuous packaging makes sense?
  2. Stay on top of new netting technologies – Many processors feel that they are satisfied with their current netting solution so there is no need to look further. Don’t settle for the status quo. It’s critical to always be in the know of new packaging innovations. For netting, there is a consistent flow of new advancements in the marketplace aligned to new fibers, colors and patterns. Chances are, if you have a challenge with your current netting solution, contact your trusted packaging supplier. It’s likely they will have a better option.
  3. Don’t be afraid to try new things – Oftentimes alternative solutions are avoided due to concerns that integrating a new product into an existing process can be time-consuming. Don’t let this fear deter you from considering innovations that offer greater cost-saving. The short-term investment would likely be offset by long-term cost savings; or even provide a new and more appealing look to your product that will boost sales.

Employing food netting innovations into food processing operations can help producers eliminate inefficiencies, reduce production and labor costs and boost product shelf appeal. Processors must first be willing to not only review their own process for possible areas of improvement, but also seek out new innovations.
